This is a list of places to buy tobacco in Helsinki, from the perspective of a person who smokes hand-rolled cigarettes with 50% rolling tobacco and 50% pipe tobacco.
Two first places are not specialist tobacco stores, so they are not allowed to show openly their tobacco products. You must ask for a list of available brands and make your choice according to the list.
R-Kioski. This is a chain of kiosks that’s ubiquitous in every city in Finland. You can find one in practically any street corner. They have a wide variety of rolling tobaccos, and a couple of basic pipe tobaccos. Pipe tobacco is something that grocery stores usually do not have.
Stockmann. This is the fanciest (and the most expensive) department store in Helsinki. Their tobacco department has a very interesting list of pipe tobaccos, but unfortunately many of the more interesting items in their list may be out of stock. I have not investigated their selection of rolling tobaccos.
The last four are specialist tobacco stores, so they openly display their selection.
Toolon sikarikauppa. This one has a very wide variety of Samuel Gawith pipe tobaccos, plus some other pipe tobaccos, at least some Peterson. Samuel Gawith is a bit expensive, but I intend to explore these tobaccos in the near future.
Havanna Aitta. This one has a wide variety of aromatic (flavoured) pipe tobaccos, for example Peterson, but unfortunately no non-aromatics. Its selection of rolling tobaccos is not otherwise so great, but it carries Manitou additive free rolling tobacco.
Tupakkakauppa Pajazzo. This one has a wide variety of rolling tobaccos, and something like ten basic pipe tobaccos. However, this is the place to buy rolling papers. They have the best selection in Helsinki, including OCB.
Tobacco Store. Despite the name, this is not so much of a tobacco store. It seems to concentrate more on selling bongs and such stuff. A couple of pipe tobaccos and a couple of rolling tobaccos. However, it is the only store in Helsinki to carry rolls of rolling paper, and for a roll fan like me, it is a worthwhile visit now and then. The price tag on rolls, however, is quite juicy.
